FAQ

Are you still using Pushme.to 1.x app?

What does the "Party is offline and you cannot message them" message I get on my iPhone mean?

Pushme.to is a service that is available not only to iPhone owners, but anyone who wants to send them free instant messages using only a web browser. When using the web browser to send and receive messages, the user is only "online" as long as he has the http://pushme.to/q/ page open and is logged in.

How do I create a new Pushme.to contact on the iPhone?

If the contact has already sent you a message, open it and click the "link" button in the upper right corner. Then choose if you want to create a new entry in your iPhone Address Book or choose an existing contact. Choosing an existing contact will also import his picture to Pushme.to, both on iPhone and on the web.

If the contact has never sent you a message, you can use the compose screen to message him first, or go to your iPhone Address Book and manually enter his nickname.

When trying to send a message to someone I see the message "Sadly, this user has no iPhone or has not installed our app". What does it mean?

This could be due to a number of reasons:

  1. You are using an unlocked iPhone. Apple Push Notifications on these device are either working randomly or not working at all. Nothing could be done about it. Give up or google for the hacky solution.
  2. Your device failed to receive recent push notifications. Apple Push Notification Services do inform us about these cases and we are obliged to stop sending notifications to your device. This might happen because of a number of reasons:

    - Notification are off on your device. To check launch iPhone Settings and tap on the Notifications menu: notifications for Pushme.to should be on on for the Badges, Alerts, and Sounds. After enabling them, switch the Airplane Mode on, wait 30 seconds, then turn it off and wait for the device to re-register.

    - Your Wi-Fi is not letting the notifications through. If you are using Wi-Fi, check that port 5223/TCP is not blocked by the Wi-Fi firewall, and if that doesn't help, change the DNS servers your Wi-Fi network is currently using to 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4.

    - Your device was offline for too long. Have you been traveling? Just open the app to re-register.

    - You have removed the Pushme.to application from your device. Notifications won't work without application being installed.

    - If you connect through your network operator, your data plan might be expired. Push Notifications are working over the internet, so your device must be connectible. Try to open any site in MobileSafari — does it open? To recover, just launch the application on the iPhone/iPod Touch, it will re-register itself with Push Notification services.

If none of the above helps, create a backup of your iPhone with iTunes, and erase and restore your iPhone. After that, switch the Notifications on again and should be all set. If you are still having problems, please email us at support@pushme.to.

How do I register to the service?

You can register to Pushme.to service by downloading the application from the AppStore, to enjoy the full Pushme.to functionality. Otherwise, when you are talking to one of your friends, click "register" above to save your messages, set your picture and welcome message.

Note that if you don't own an iPhone, it will always have to be you to initiate a conversation when you are offline. iPhone users will not be able to send you instant messages when you are offline.

What do I need to use Pushme.to?

To use it on iPhone, you need to have an iPhone or iPod Touch running OS 3.0 or higher and Push Notifications enabled. Pushme.to uses your data connection when you open the application to get messages, and push notifications service to deliver the messages when the application is closed. Keep in mind that Apple™ notification services rely on your cellular data connection.

To use it on the web you need nothing but a browser, and maybe a friend who uses it on iPhone, with whom to talk to. ;)

How does it work?

You download the Pushme.to application from the AppStore and register to the service, choosing a nickname that will be part of your link http://pushme.to/nickname/

Now you can put this link on your blog, send via email or sms to your friends and you can start exchanging real-time messages for free.

Why is it better then email, instant messaging or SMS?

The messages are free, unlike SMS, and arrive immediately after being sent. The other party does not have to have an iPhone or even register - they just open your page and you start talking in real time. This is a great time saver, since your iPhone party is "always online", so it's just like an SMS. Also, we put you messages inbox "in the cloud", and should you not have your iPhone with you, you can always send and receive messages using your browser.

How can I send send new messages from my iPhone if I do not have the application?

It's better if you install it, but if you really want to (it will not be as pretty) - open http://pushme.to/nickname/ link in MobileSafari.

How do I send a quick message to someone in my iPhone Address Book?

Go to "compose" screen and start typing the nick or name of your contact - it will appear below. Tap to compose.

Note: you can also tap those links in the iPhone address book or click on the same link on a Mac computer using our Mac Companion application.

Can I use multiple nicknames on one device?

Not for now. We might introduce multiple accounts for imaginary friends later. ;)

I don't like my nickname and I want a different account, how can I do that?

Just remove the application from your iPhone/iPod Touch and install again. You will be asked to register or login. Make a new registration.

Will my messages be deleted if I register and login with a different nickname?

No, they won't — you will be able to read them when you login with your old nickname.

How do I delete one message or all of them?

You can delete the whole conversation on your iPhone. You cannot delete messages on the web interface right now, but this will be fixed soon.

Can I install the application on more than one device and push messages under the same nickname to multiple devices?

No. The last successfully installed application will receive messages on the device.

Are there any additional costs to use the service or send messages?

No, once you have the application, there are no other costs. You can send and receive as many messages as you like.

When will you support the landscape mode?

In the next 2.1 update.

How do I spell the name of the app?

"Push me, too".

Pushme.to v1 upgrade questions

Why did you stop supporting older Pushme.to app?

We introduced Pushme.to 2.x with a huge change of the philosophy: it now supports two-communication with people using just a regular browser. We have also changed a lot on the server side, enabling for blazingly fast messaging.

The new version stores all your existing messages, preserves widgets and your nickname. The upgrade happens automatically as users are upgrading their applications on the device and the vast majority of users did so. We gave a lot of time for the users to upgrade to Pushme.to 2.x, so only the small minority of users didn't care enough about their applications to not even paying attention to AppStore badges and upgrade.

So in order to focus on the better Pushme.to we had to sacrifice support for the older version.

Why am I seeing "user must upgrade" message?

Because you and or/your party are still using Pushme.to 1.x version which is quite old and not supported anymore.

I was using Pushme.to Lite. What should I do?

In order to continue using Pushme.to you should upgrade to full Pushme.to 2.x version from the AppStore for FREE. When you first run the newer version on your device this message will disappear and new features will be enabled for your nickname.

After you first run the full Pushme.to 2.x app on your device, please choose "Login" and enter your existing nickname and password. The upgrade will preserve all your messages and your nickname!

Again: the full application is now FREE. This is why we have discontinued the Lite version.

Note: please remove "Pushme.to Lite" from your device after you have successfully installed the full version.

Do I have to pay for Pushme.to?

No. Not even if you did not buy Pushme.to in the past. Pushme.to is now FREE.

Do I keep my messages when upgrading?

Yes. All your messages are kept intact.

Should I upgrade?

Sure.
